OLIVO Y MITOLOGÍA I

Cecrops (Cécrope I) atrajo prontamente a su alrededor a los habitantes del Ática dispersos hasta entonces, errantes, miserables. Eran los tiempos en los que los dioses recorrían la tierra tomando posesión de las poblaciones donde había de prestárseles un culto particular.

Neptuno (Poseidón entre los griegos) y Minerva (Atenea entre los griegos) asistían a la fundación de esta ciudad, que Cecrops acababa de hacer surgir, y se disputaban el honor de darle su nombre. Se acordó concederlo a aquel de los dos que le diera a sus habitantes el don más importante.

Neptuno, al golpe de su tridente, hizo salir del suelo un fogoso caballo lleno de fuerza y ardimiento; pero Minerva superó este efecto haciendo brotar un OLIVO, símbolo de la paz y generoso de su aceite.

Minerva (Atenea entre los griegos) se convirtió así en la protectora de la ciudad de Atenas, y en ella fue honrada con preferencia a ningún otro dios del Olimpo. El olivo que había hecho nacer sobre la roca herida por el tridente de Neptuno, fue rodeado por un muro. Dicha roca fue la Acrópolis, donde el olivo primitivo fue guardado por la casta de guerreros consagrada a la defensa de esta fortaleza, mientras que el resto del pueblo se estableció sobre las laderas y en la llanura vecina.

Cuando las velas de los piratas pasaban por el horizonte, o cuando los enemigos tebanos aparecían en los desfiladeros de Parnes, los ciudadanos se agrupaban alrededor del olivo sagrado dentro de los muros de la Acrópolis.

He remembered to grant it to that one of the two that him the most important gift was giving to his inhabitants.

Neptune, to the blow of his trident, made go out of the soil a fiery horse full of force and conflagration; but Minerva overcame this effect making sprout an OLIVE TREE, symbol of the peace and generously of his oil.

Minerva (Atenea between the Greeks) turned this way into the protective one of the city of Athens, and in her it was honored by preference to no other god of the Olympus. The olive tree that it had made be born on the rock hurt by the trident of Neptune, was surrounded by a wall. The above mentioned rock was the Acropolis, where the primitive olive tree was guarded by the warriors' caste dedicated to the defense of this strength, whereas the rest of the people was established on the hillsides and in the neighboring plain.
 

When the candles of the pirates were happening for the horizon, or when the enemies tebanos were appearing in the gorges of Parnes, the citizens were gathering in crowds about the sacred olive tree inside the walls of the Acropolis.
